Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy

Chapter One: Before the 16th Century

A map that shows different Indian tribes before the 16th century

Different groups of Indians lived throughout Florida. The war-
like Calusa lived in the southwestern part, while the Tequesta lived in
the Miami area and the Ais above them. The
Apalachee and the Pensacola lived in the Pan-
handle, and the Timucua lived throughout much
of north Florida. The Indians in the Lake City
                                 area were probably Timucua.
The Timucua had many rituals, only a few

of which archaeologists understand today. They
used, for example, a horned owl totem pole like
this one found along the St. Johns River. The
Timucua were probably the first Native
Americans to see Ponce de León land near
                                 present-day St. Augustine in 1513.
