A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks

A COLUMBIA COUNTY BOY’S RECOLLECTIONS AND

                                                      MEMORIES
                                    OF COLUMBIA COUNTY, FLORIDA

Today happens lo be February 8, 2002, and I’ve Finally gotten around to starting to do something I’ve
been thinking about for some time.

Ever since my oldest sister Golde wrote her book about growing up in Columbia County, I've had a
number of people tell me perhaps I ought to do the same thing, and the idea does have some appeal to
me, because there have been a few things in my life that I would like to put down so others can get a
better insight into what kind of fellow 1 am, be that for belter or worse. So, I guess this is the beginning
of what may or may not be a book that somebody may want to read but it is the first effort to that end.

This book is written with the knowledge that it may be of little interest except to those who also happen
to have been raised in or near Lake City, Florida. They will remember most of the people mentioned in
                 it.

Right now I am riding down Duval Street in my car, on the way to the Post Office with a little bit of
mail that we found it necessary to send out, as well as one certified letter which is going out to some
worthless son of a gun that won’t pay me and I’m starting the process of having to repossess his
property. 1 do not like to have to do that. I take no pleasure in it, but there is a necessity for that from
                 time to time.

A disclosure of that nature may not set the right tone for the impression that 1 would like to give in my
book, but it is just a part of what I have had to learn to do over the past 40 years that I have been in the
real estate business, selling and financing land.

So, in the next few months, or whatever, I plan to keep this little tape recorder in the car and as things
occur to me, I will speak them into the microphone in the hopes that somebody may set them down and
                 someday read them.

I do not write this book with any degree of feeling important, but inasmuch as Golde’s book seemed to
be of such interest to many of the local people, I am arrogant and conceited enough to maybe think that
someone might enjoy hearing about one or two of the things that have happened to me during my
lifetime. So, I hope the reader enjoys it, and if not, nobody is forcing anyone to read it.
